If you are an employer or a person in control of a premises (such as a building owner or landlord), you are required by law to carry out a risk assessment for Legionella bacteria in Ireland. This includes identifying and assessing sources of risk, and putting control measures in place to reduce the risk of Legionnaire’s disease.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) in Ireland has published guidelines on how to carry out a Legionella risk assessment, which are available on their website. The guidelines provide information on the types of premises that are required to carry out a risk assessment, as well as the steps involved in the risk assessment process.

If you are unsure whether you are required to carry out a Legionella risk assessment, or if you have any questions about the process, you should contact the HSA for guidance or contact us directly for a free quote info@safersolutions.ie or visit our website www.safersolutiions.ie

In Ireland, it is recommended that businesses have a written Legionella control policy in place to prevent the growth and spread of Legionella bacteria. This policy should outline the steps that the business will take to identify and assess any sources of Legionella on their premises, as well as the measures that will be taken to control and prevent the growth of the bacteria. The policy should also outline the procedures for responding to any cases of Legionnaires’ disease that may occur among employees or visitors to the premises.

Some key elements that should be included in a Legionella control policy include:

Identifying and assessing sources of Legionella on the premises

Implementing controls to prevent the growth of Legionella

Monitoring the effectiveness of these controls

Developing procedures for responding to cases of Legionnaires’ disease

Providing training to employees on Legionella prevention and control

Keeping records of all activities related to Legionella control

It is important to regularly review and update the Legionella control policy to ensure that it remains effective in preventing the growth and spread of Legionella bacteria.
