Different fires need different extinguishers. The main types are:
The right choice depends on the risks in your building, so we recommend deciding alongside your fire risk assessment. Our guide to choosing the right fire extinguisher explains more.
An extinguisher that has not been checked is only a guess. Typically that means regular visual checks by someone on your team, such as whether it is in place, undamaged and has its pin and seal intact, plus servicing by a competent person. We maintain fire extinguishers and help you keep a clear record in your fire safety register.
Extinguishers are normally sited on escape routes, near exits and close to the hazards they protect. They should be easy to see, easy to reach and mounted at a sensible height. Our fire safety signs guide covers signage.
Under section 18(2) of the Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003, a person having control over premises must take reasonable measures to guard against outbreak of fire and to protect people if one occurs. Employers must also manage workplace risks under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Extinguishers are one part of that, alongside your alarm, escape routes and staff awareness. See fire safety awareness for staff.
A fire risk assessment looks at your premises, your processes and your people, and tells you what firefighting equipment makes sense. Call 086 275 9728 or email info@safersolutions.ie for a no-obligation chat.
