When the weather turns cold, more heaters come out and more things get placed too close to them. A few habits make a real difference.
Portable heaters
- Keep them clear of paper, curtains, stock and furniture.
- Plug them straight into a socket where possible, not into extension leads. See our guide on extension leads.
- Switch them off and unplug them at the end of the day.
- Never use them to dry clothes or textiles.
Fixed heating
- Keep boiler rooms and plant areas free of storage.
- Have gas and oil appliances serviced by a competent person and keep records.
- Keep vents and flues clear.
Everyday habits
- Do not stack stock against radiators.
- Check electrical blankets and heaters for damage.
- Keep escape routes clear of heaters and winter stock.
Your duties
The Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003 expect a person in control of premises to take reasonable measures to guard against fire. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 sets wider duties for employers. Your fire risk assessment should consider heating as an ignition source.
Call 086 275 9728 or email info@safersolutions.ie to arrange a fire risk assessment. See our guide to good housekeeping or fire risk assessments in Ireland.
