A busy salon has a lot going on: heated tools, hairdryers, washing machines, chemicals and a steady stream of clients. Most of the risks are ordinary ones, which means simple habits can control them.

Common fire risks in salons

  • Heated styling tools left on or placed on towels and worktops.
  • Hairdryers and extension leads overloaded or damaged. See our guide on extension leads and electrical risks.
  • Aerosols, nail products and other flammable liquids stored near heat.
  • Towels and laundry piling up, especially near washers and dryers.
  • Candles and decorations used for atmosphere.
  • Small premises with one narrow exit or a back room used for storage.

Simple checks

  • Switch tools off and unplug them at the end of the day, and give them a heat-proof place to cool.
  • Store flammable products in small quantities, away from heat, and follow the label.
  • Keep exits and corridors clear, including the back door.
  • Check that the alarm, extinguisher and any fire blanket are in place and in date. See our page on fire extinguishers.
  • Brief new and part-time staff on what to do if the alarm sounds.

Your duties

Under the Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003, a person in control of premises must take reasonable measures to guard against fire and to protect people if one occurs. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 places wider duties on employers to manage workplace risks.
