Salons use water constantly, but not always evenly. Some basins, hoses and sinks are used all day, others only occasionally. Where water sits still and then sprays, legionella risk can follow.

Equipment worth checking

  • Backwash basins and spray hoses that create a fine spray.
  • Showers for staff or treatment rooms. See our guide on showerhead cleaning.
  • Little-used taps in treatment rooms, stockrooms and cleaners’ sinks.
  • Hot water cylinders that may not hold temperature. See water temperatures.

Good practice

  • Flush little-used outlets regularly and record it.
  • Clean and descale hoses, spray heads and showerheads on a routine.
  • Include all outlets in your legionella risk assessment.
  • Plan flushing after holidays or closures. See reopening a building.

Your duties

Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers must manage risks to the health of employees and others affected by their activities, which includes risks from water systems. The HPSC National Guidelines for the Control of Legionellosis in Ireland (2009) give practical guidance.
