When the last person leaves, nobody is there to notice a problem. A five-minute walk-round at closing time is one of the simplest ways to reduce overnight fire risk.

A practical checklist

  • Switch off and unplug equipment that does not need to stay on, such as heaters, toasters, kettles and chargers.
  • Check cooking areas are off, clean and clear of grease and paper.
  • Empty bins and take waste out of the building where possible.
  • Close fire doors and never wedge them open. See our guide on fire doors.
  • Check smoking areas for lit or discarded cigarettes.
  • Keep escape routes clear and exit doors operable from inside.
  • Check that alarms are set and that detection has not been covered.
  • Lock up windows and doors, and check lights and security as normal.

Make it routine

Give the task to a named person, keep a short signed checklist and record it in your fire safety register. Review the list if your layout or equipment changes.

Your duties

Under the Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003, a person in control of premises must take reasonable measures to guard against fire and to protect people if one occurs. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 places wider duties on employers to manage workplace risks.
