Portable fire extinguishers are often the first line of response in a small fire, but only if they are the right type, in the right place and working when needed. For most workplaces in Ireland, that means regular checks and a planned annual service. If you want help with fire extinguisher sales and maintenance, our team can arrange it.

What the law expects

Under the Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003 (section 18(2)), the person in control of a premises must take reasonable measures to guard against outbreak of fire and to ensure the safety of people if one occurs. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 also requires employers to manage risks to employees. Extinguishers should be considered as part of your fire risk assessment, which should identify what type and how many you need.

Routine checks you can do in-house

  • Check each extinguisher is in its designated position, visible and not blocked.
  • Confirm the pressure gauge (where fitted) shows it is in the operating range.
  • Look for damage, corrosion, a missing pin or broken tamper seal, and a damaged hose or horn.
  • Make sure the correct signage is in place and the instructions are legible.
  • Record the check in your fire safety register.

Annual service by a competent person

In addition to routine checks, extinguishers should be serviced by a competent person at least annually, in line with the Irish standard for portable fire extinguishers, I.S. 291. The service is recorded, usually on a tag attached to each unit. Extinguishers that are damaged, discharged or out of date should be replaced or refilled promptly.

Choosing the right type

Different fires need different extinguishers. Water, foam, CO2 and dry powder units suit different hazards, such as ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, electrical equipment and cooking oils. Our guide to choosing the right fire extinguisher for your workplace explains the options.
