An extinguisher that looks fine on the wall may not work when you need it. That is why portable extinguishers should be checked regularly and serviced by a competent person at least once a year, in line with the Irish standard for portable fire extinguishers, I.S. 291. Here is what typically happens at an annual service, so you know what to expect from fire extinguisher maintenance.
What the technician checks
- The extinguisher type is right for its location and the hazards nearby.
- It is in the correct position, mounted properly and easy to reach.
- The pressure gauge or weight, where applicable, shows it is charged.
- The seals, safety pin, hose, horn and nozzle are intact and not blocked.
- The body is free from corrosion, dents or other damage.
- Labels and operating instructions are legible.
What can be replaced or refilled
Units that are damaged, discharged or not fit for use are repaired, refilled or replaced. Some types also need more detailed servicing at longer intervals, and your service provider will advise on what applies to the extinguishers you have.
The service record
After the service, each extinguisher is normally tagged or labelled with the date and details of the work, and you should receive a record for your fire safety register. That record is useful evidence that you are meeting your duties under the Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003, which require reasonable measures to guard against fire.
What you should do in between
Between annual services, do regular visual checks yourself: is each extinguisher in place, is the pin intact and the gauge in range, and is anything blocking access? Our guide to extinguisher checks and servicing covers this, and choosing the right extinguisher explains the different types.
