A fire risk assessment is only useful if it is accurate, current and acted on. These are some of the mistakes we see people ask about.
- Using a generic template. Your building, people and processes are specific to you. The assessment should reflect that.
- Not walking the whole premises. Stores, roof spaces, plant rooms and upper floors are easy to miss.
- Forgetting who is at risk. Visitors, contractors, lone workers and people who need help to leave all matter.
- Filing it and forgetting it. Actions need owners and dates, and progress should be checked.
- Not reviewing after changes. New layouts, new equipment, new processes or a change of use can all make an assessment out of date. See our guide on how often to review.
- Not telling staff. The findings should shape your drills, induction and daily habits.
- Poor records. Testing, servicing, drills and repairs belong in your fire safety register.
Your duties
The Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 expect those in control of premises and employers to manage fire risk. See our guide on acting on your report.
