A fire blanket is a simple, useful piece of equipment for small fires in kitchens and canteens. Used properly, it can smother a pan fire quickly. Used at the wrong moment, it puts people at risk.

Where a fire blanket helps

  • Small fires in pans and fryers where it is safe to approach.
  • Fires involving a person’s clothing, where it can be wrapped around them (follow the manufacturer’s instructions).

Where it does not

  • Large or spreading fires.
  • Any fire where you cannot reach it without leaning over the flames.

Siting and checks

  • Mount it on a wall near the cooking area but not directly above the cooker, so you do not have to reach across the fire.
  • Keep it visible and unobstructed.
  • Check it is in its packaging, undamaged and with the pull tapes accessible. Replace it if it has been used or damaged, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on replacement.
  • Record checks in your fire safety register.

Basic use

Pull the tapes to release it, hold it in front of you to shield your hands, lay it over the pan away from you, turn off the heat if safe, and leave it in place until fully cool. If in doubt, get everyone out and call the fire brigade.

Your duties

The Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003 expect a person in control of premises to take reasonable measures to guard against fire. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires employers to manage workplace risks. Your fire risk assessment will say what firefighting equipment suits your kitchen.
