A spare room full of stock, a garage workshop or a studio at the back of the house can change the fire risk of your home. The more your business looks like a workplace, the more it helps to think like one.
Questions to ask
- Do employees, customers or visitors come to the property?
- Do you store stock, packaging or flammable materials?
- Do you use heat, chemicals or lots of electrical equipment?
- Do you charge batteries? See our guide on lithium batteries.
Practical steps
- Fit working smoke detection and test it regularly.
- Keep stock and packaging away from heaters and electrics.
- Keep escape routes clear, including from the business area.
- Store flammable liquids and gas safely.
- Have a clear plan for visitors and any employees.
- Review your insurance arrangements and speak to your insurer about your activities.
Your duties
Where employees or the public use the premises, the Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 may apply. If you are unsure, take advice.
A fire risk assessment from Safer Solutions will look at how the space is used and what to improve. Call 086 275 9728 or email info@safersolutions.ie. See our fire risk assessments in Ireland page.
