Gas cylinders are common in kitchens, workshops and outdoor areas, and a leak or fire involving one can escalate quickly. Sensible storage reduces the risk.

Practical points

  • Store outside where practical, in a well-ventilated, secure area away from drains, cellars and building openings.
  • Keep them upright and secured so they cannot fall.
  • Keep away from ignition sources such as electrical equipment, heaters, naked flames and smoking areas.
  • Keep escape routes clear. Never store cylinders in stairwells or corridors.
  • Keep quantities to the minimum needed.
  • Separate full and empty cylinders and keep valves closed.
  • Check regularly for damage, corrosion and leaks, and report faults to the supplier.
  • Display clear signage so people and the fire brigade know what is stored.

Follow your gas supplier’s guidance for the product you use. Your fire risk assessment should identify where cylinders are and whether the arrangements suit your building.

Your duties

The Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 expect those in control of premises and employers to manage fire risk and workplace hazards.
