Legionella control is a year-round job, but warm spells can put extra pressure on cold water systems. Cold water that warms up is better for bacteria.
Where warmth creeps in
- Cold water tanks in hot loft spaces or plant rooms.
- Cold pipes running next to hot pipes without insulation.
- Little-used outlets where water sits and slowly warms.
- Outbuildings and seasonal premises that sit idle.
What to check
- Cold water temperatures. Check them at representative outlets as set out in your risk assessment. See our guide on water temperatures.
- Tank condition. Lids, screens and cleanliness. See our guide on cold water storage tanks.
- Insulation on pipes and tanks.
- Flushing of little-used outlets.
- Records. Note readings and actions in your logbook.
Your duties
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 expects employers to manage risks to health. The HPSC national guidelines set out practical measures for controlling legionella in water systems.
If cold water readings are creeping up, a legionella risk assessment from Safer Solutions will help you find out why. Call 086 275 9728 or email info@safersolutions.ie. See our guide on water tank cleaning.
